Description

Students will delve into the question of who is responsible for the imagery of Native Americans. The lesson begins with students completing a Warm Up activity that questions the background knowledge of the class pertaining to Native Americans and their encounters with white settlers. Next, students will work in pairs to visit stations. Each station has a primary source document of various ways Americans used the image of Native Americans to their benefit. Students will complete a matrix by analyzing the resources. Near the end of station work, instruct pairs to return to a station they have already visited. They should re-read information and make sure they can answer all questions. They will “teach” their primary source to the class. This allows all students to see all primary sources. The instructor will debrief the information students obtained from the station work by discussing which images are positive, which images are negative and compare the images to how white settlers are portrayed. The class will read background information about the Imagery of Native Americans and complete reading questions before discussing who the students feels is responsible for how Native Americans are portrayed in history. Finally, students will compose an argumentative paragraph that details who they feel is responsible for the imagery surrounding Native Americans.
