Academic vocabulary is very important and all teachers are being pressured to provide as much exposure to academic vocabulary terms as possible. These vocabulary activities were created to go along with National Geographic Cengage’s Inside curriculum, level A (blue book), but it is not necessary to be using this curriculum to use this resource. Each unit includes the 8 academic vocabulary words for each of the eight units. Since the curriculum repeats some words this resource also repeats some words In my class I start each unit by working together to complete the chart and then scatter the other activities through out the unit (each activity takes about 5-10 minutes). The assessment is given near the end of the unit, separate from the unit assessment. The activities:
Vocabulary chart—each chart has the words, a picture and places for students to write a definition and example sentence; at the start of each unit I go through the chart with the students and fill in the definitions and sentences
Vocabulary word wall cards—each word is on its own card with a definition and picture; at the start of each unit as we complete the chart we add the cards to our word wall (organized by part of speech); I highly suggest printing these using the 2-sided feature so the book and unit number are on the back to save time resorting come the end of the semester or year
Sort cards—one card has the word, the second card has the definition; print/laminate/cut the cards (4 cards per sheet); students match each term to its corresponding definition
Clip cards—in the center is a definition; students clip a cloths pin onto the correct term; print/laminate/cut the cards on the black lines (4 cards per sheet)
Match-It cards—these cards have the words on one side and definition on the other; print the cards, laminate and cut where indicated and they will slide right into the Match-Up boards (plans available in my shop) for students to match terms and definitions using rubber bands (print double-sided with following page for self-checking)
Worksheets—crossword and cloze; each is a half page worksheet for students to practice their words
Scrambled Words—this is a recording sheet, to make the activity use scrabble tiles (or other letter things such as beads) to spell out each word and place into a plastic egg; give students a set of plastic eggs and have the unscramble the words, write them next to the correct definitions and record the egg number
Assessment—students will write the words as you say them, write their own definitions for the words and complete a cloze activity
