Description

Greetings! If you are looking for a fun lab that gives students a chance to perform the scientific method by problem solving, hypothesizing, collecting, organizing, graphing, analyzing data, and writing a conclusion, then this lab is for you!

This listing features a full-page student bubble gum lab sheet and a key with the possible answers in red font. I participated in a similar version of this lab as a college freshman the first week of general biology. This lab is more suited for a middle school science course, or for an introductory unit about the scientific method in a high school biology course.

It is the students' mission to fill out the incomplete sections of this lab sheet and submit it for the lab report. In this version of the bubble gum lab, students will perform the following tasks.
  • Write a hypothesis
  • Record observations
  • Write a conclusion with consideration of the variables that may have affected the results
  • Restate the hypothesis in the conclusion and state whether it was correct, partially correct, or incorrect
  • Record the size of the bubbles from their group and three other groups in the data table
  • Create a line graph that illustrates how the number of pieces of gum affects the size of the bubble blown in cm.
Important! The facilitating teacher will need a package of multi-colored gum balls and a classroom set of metric rulers. Student use of timers is optional. It is possible for students to utilize the classroom clock to keep track of the two-minute time intervals.

This lab comes with explicit, concise directions. The experimental layout on the first side of the student lab sheet follows P.H.E.O.C. [Purpose, Hypothesis, Experiment(-al directions), Observation, Conclusion]. The backside of the student lab sheet houses the data table and line graph grid.
