Different Types of Maps and their Uses
The main goal of this lesson is to allow students to be able to identify, use, and analyze multiple maps, as well as make connections between them to see how what one map shows can influence the other.

*Although not necessary, having computers or Ipads available for students will allow for the students to easily see each map in full color during the activity. If this is not possible, the maps can still be projected onto a screen.*

- A 20 slide PowerPoint Presentation with: Do Now, Class Notes, Video Links, Assessment Questions, Activity Instructions, Map Pictures, Conclusion Question
Two Activity Options are provided. Providing students with computers or Ipads is recommended for both options. If Ipads or computers are not available, the instructor may project each of the maps up on a screen if that is available to them.
Activity Option 1:
Students use the Reading (606 Words) and 5 Maps to complete the Different Types of Maps – Analysis Worksheet.
This activity option is slightly more focused than Option 2 and offers students some more direct guidance through scaffolded questions when they are asked to analyze the maps.
Activity Option 2:
Students use the Reading (606 Words) and 5 Maps to complete the graphic organizer
Using the organizer student are asked to answer the following questions on the maps:
- What type of map is this?
- Describe 3 things you can tell about the United States based on this map….
- How can you connect what this map is showing to the other maps?....How might they relate to one another?
