Description

Thank you for your interest in the Groundhog Day - Will He See His Shadow? PowerPoint and Activity Pack from Happy Hive Homeschooling / homeschool holiday.com.

***This Packet is UPDATED and ready for February 2024!

Our products are designed to coordinate with fun holidays throughout the year. This packet is designed to accompany Groundhog Day, February 2.

Feel free to use it anytime.

This Presentation and Activity Pack is a fun way to introduce learners to Groundhog's Day and the many years of predictions made by Punxsutawney Phil!

There is also a fun FACT OR FICTION activity to play with the class.

There is a link to google slides so the information can be presented easily.

I have included a suggested teaching time frame so learners have time to make their predictions BEFORE Phil does!

In the PDF you receive printable classroom posters you can use to hang explaining under which conditions the Groundhog predicts a "more winter" versus and "early spring". Be sure your learners understand that this is simply legend and that the Spring Equinox is a fixed date each year.

There is a chart with Punxsutawney Phil's predictions from 1887 to present. You can print this as a handout, as well as project it using the slide presentation. The number of times he predicted 6 more weeks of winter, an early spring or there was no record are summarized on page for learners on the next page /slide. It is at your discretion if you print these pages for students or use them from the presentation.

After exploring the data with learners it is fun to use the coloring pages to make predictions. I had plenty of copies of each on hand, I then mounted them to colorful construction paper and made a bulletin board.

As an extension, or before making their official prediction, learners can graph Phil's predictions since the year they were born using the worksheet provided.

I have also included a common verse relating to Candlemas and the weather on that day as a copywork page. (Trace, Print and Cursive)

Finally, the activities end with a shadow art activity that is easy to accomplish in under 30 minutes. I found it best to display the directions on my whiteboard. I set up stations around the room with tape, paper and flashlights. Students brought items from home, or you could use things in the classroom.

I hope you have fun exploring the weather and Groundhog day!

May your educational Journey Be Blessed!

- Mrs. Crabtree
