Political Cartoon Bundle: Immigration in 19th Century America

These two political cartoons, Welcome to All and Uncle Sam's Lodging House - both by the Austrian-born cartoonist Joseph Keppler - focus on the influx of immigrants arriving in the United States during the late 19th century. On the one hand, Americans seemed to welcome immigrants escaping war, famine, and political oppression. At the same time, however, Americans also resented the competition these immigrants would bring for factory work, and feared that American culture would be "polluted" by foreign traditions.

The download includes the following:

1. A PowerPoint - complete with discussion notes for each slide - that teachers can use to lead students through the cartoon.

2. An introductory paragraph that describes the circumstances behind each cartoon.

3. A full-size picture of each cartoon, allowing students to label as instructed.

4. A graphic organizer that assists students in identifying the different parts of each cartoon, analyzing symbols, and determining meaning.
