Thank you for your interest in the Talk Like a Pirate Vocabulary Activity from
This activity is inspired by inspired by the Holiday: Talk Like A Pirate Day, September 19th.
It also makes a great introduction or review on the Parts of Speech and word study techniques using meaningful words.
To get learners excited for the topic I begin with a Swashbuckling (exciting) Pirate story or two! You might want to check out our Talk Like a Pirate Activity pack - It has 10 different Pirate read alouds provided for you.
Pirate Speak is quite descriptive and this is a good opportunity to be sure learners know or are familiar with the parts of speech. There is a handout with the definitions you can use as well as links to the classic Grammar Rock videos for each of the 8 parts of speech. This isn't a full curriculum, but helps with the vocabulary study.
Learners are provided with the definition of the Pirate Vocabulary, as well as the part of speech for each word. They can use a dictionary or an online reference to identify synonyms, antonyms for the word/ phrase, keeping in mind this may take some creativity due to the unique nature of the "pirate words".The worksheet then asks them to define the word in their "own words" and to write a sentence. Finally there is room for a picture. Some of these items can be challenging, depending on the word. Guidance from a mentor is recommended.
You can have learners complete this sheet for all of the words or just some of the words - that's up to you! Simply print as many of the pages as you need for each learner accordingly.
