The Jataka Parables are a collection of 550 anecdotes that were told by the Buddha about his past incarnations in order to teach about the path to enlightenment and Buddhist morality.
Parable 18 is a valuable tool in teaching about Buddhism because it clearly demonstrates the Hindu origins of Buddhism yet still emphasizes Buddhist philosophy regarding life, reincarnation, and karma (in contrast to Hindu teaching). Many Buddhist scholars argue that the moral Buddha intended with this anecdote was that religious beliefs can be terribly misguided and ignorant. This shortened version of the tale is edited to facilitate better student engagement and understanding.
