Description

I created this three page activity to help students in physical science better understand the components of a chemical equation. Chemistry teachers may also utilize this activity as a remedial resource in efforts to differentiate their curriculum with accommodations to meet the needs of students who struggle to learn.

In this lesson, students have to identify:
  • The reactants and products in forward reactions
  • The coefficient and subscript number for a given atom or molecule
  • The number of molecules in an equation with a coefficient greater than one
  • The number of molecule species in an equation that contain subscripts
  • What the subscript indicates the number of
  • Which atoms in a molecule are affected by the coefficient number
  • Which labeled reactants and products by symbol are aqueous, liquid, solid, or gaseous
  • Which component is replaced in a single replacement reaction from the outside metal
  • The number of a specified product formed from a specified number of a given reactant.
There are three complex reactions in chemical equation form students analyze in this activity with follow up questions. Students will also classify the reactions and assess whether they are balanced in order to honor the Law of Conservation of Mass.

This PDF document will become editable upon conversion to Microsoft Word with an Adobe Acrobat Reader DC app. It includes a key with the answers in red font.
