Description

Teach crime scene search patterns through investigation, decision-making, and evidence-based reasoning not simple memorization.

In Searching With Purpose, students take on the role of crime scene investigators as they evaluate six different scenes and determine which search strategy best fits each situation. Students consider the size and shape of the scene, obstacles, number of investigators, and scene conditions before recommending and defending a search pattern.

Students work with four common crime scene search patterns:

Parallel/Strip • Grid • Spiral • Zone/Quadrant

After learning the patterns, students apply their knowledge to six Mini Investigations, including a soccer complex, apartment, nature trail, warehouse, school hallway, and shopping center. Each scenario provides different conditions that require students to think critically about how a real scene should be searched.

Rather than treating every scenario as having one rigid answer, this activity encourages students to choose, justify, and defend their recommendations. The included teacher discussion guide identifies the strongest search pattern for each scene while also recognizing reasonable alternative strategies when students support their thinking with scene-specific evidence.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

• Teacher Lesson Guide with a complete lesson sequence

• Crime Scene Search Patterns Field Reference

• Student Mini Investigation Field Notes

• Teacher Answer & Discussion Guide

• 6 Mini Investigation mission scenarios

• 6 detailed crime scene images for students to analyze and mark

• Two scene-image formats — convenient six-on-one-page format AND full-page versions for larger group work, laminating, or projecting

• Terms of Use

The six investigation images provide students with actual scene layouts to analyze, including open spaces, divided rooms, obstacles, shelving, hallways, vehicles, and other environmental features that influence search-pattern selection.

FLEXIBLE CLASSROOM USE

Use the complete activity as a 75–90 minute forensic science lesson, or select individual Mini Investigations for shorter class periods, review, stations, partner work, or assessment. The scene images can be laminated or placed in sheet protectors so students can draw and revise their proposed search paths with dry-erase markers.
