Description

Your new band students just opened their cases for the first time. They can’t find the water key, the reed goes on upside down, and “ligature” sounds like a foreign word. For some of them, it is one.

Created by Cindy Kamp, a National Board Certified Music Teacher with two master’s degrees and 22 years of PK–6 experience teaching general music, band, strings, and chorus.

My Instrument Words gives every beginning band student a clear, labeled picture of their own instrument. Students learn the real names of the parts from day one, and those words stick because they see them, say them, and touch them on their own instrument.

What’s Included (10 pages)

  • Cover page
  • Teacher Directions page with a simple 5-step routine: Prepare, Introduce, Explore Key Vocabulary, Guided Practice, and Example Activities, plus a ready-to-use sentence frame
  • 8 full-page labeled parts cards: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, and percussion
  • Close-up insets on every wind and brass card, showing the small parts students struggle to find: the embouchure hole, reed and ligature, water key, and rotary valve
  • A percussion card covering snare drum, bells, xylophone, cymbals, triangle, tambourine, bass drum, and practice pad

Perfect For

  • Beginning band, grades 3–8
  • ELL/MLL newcomers who need picture-supported vocabulary
  • New students who join mid-year
  • Sub plans and quick vocabulary checks
  • Instrument demonstration and recruitment nights

Why Teachers Love It

  • The part names are real band vocabulary, not simplified stand-ins.
  • Each card has clean, full-page art that projects well and stays easy to read from the back row.
  • It’s low-prep: print, slip the cards into sheet protectors, and teach.
  • The sentence frame (“The ___ helps me ___.”) builds academic language alongside instrument knowledge.
  • The part names match the Instrument Care & Setup Posters exactly, so vocabulary carries from one lesson to the next.

Pair It With
The Instrument Care & Setup Posters use the same part names, so “oil the valves” lines up with the “valves” label on these cards. Both sets are also part of the complete Band Newcomer Toolkit for ELL/MLL students, the best value for building a welcoming band room from the first rehearsal.
