Description
Some students sit at the edge of music class, unsure whether they can take part. This colorful self-check shows them all the ways they already can, and gives them a goal to reach for.
Created by Cindy Kamp of MusicKamp, a National Board Certified Music Teacher with 22 years of PK–6 classroom experience.
What's Included
One full-color, landscape self-check page with:
- 6 illustrated "I can" statements: I can listen to the music, use music words, point or move, share my ideas, work with others, and enjoy music! Each one has a picture and a checkbox.
- "Draw or write my goal!": an open space so every student can set a goal, even before they can write in English
- "I can do it!": a celebratory illustration to build confidence
Perfect For
- Newcomer ELL/MLL students in their first weeks of music class
- Students with IEPs, or students who communicate by pointing
- Beginning-of-year goal setting
- Student self-reflection and portfolios
- Conferences with students, families, or support staff
Why Teachers Love It
- Every statement has a picture, so students can use it on their own without reading.
- Drawing counts. Students can show their goal however they communicate best.
- It celebrates participation in every form, from listening and pointing to sharing ideas.
- Reusable. Laminate it and use dry-erase markers to check off progress all year.
