Description
This biography of the 15th century Aztec ruler Moctezuma II focuses on his success in gaining control over several smaller states in the Yucatan region. This success, however, was tempered by resentment among these vassal states over the harsh treatment they endured under the Aztec. Upon arriving in the Yucatan region in 1519, the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés was able to exploit this resentment and drive a wedge between the Aztec and the vassal states. Moctezuma's unwillingness to challenge the conquistadores angered the Aztec nobility and ultimately led to his execution at the hands of an angry mob.
