Turn spelling and word-building practice into a friendly competition with Critter Corner's Head-to-Head Vowel Challenge!

This interactive literacy game challenges children to create words using a randomly selected vowel while strategically using their available consonants.

Designed for two players per game board, the challenge can easily accommodate additional players by printing extra sheets. Perfect for partner activities, small groups, and classroom competitions!

Each player starts with all 21 consonants. As they create words, they cross out the consonants they use. Once a consonant has been crossed out, it cannot be used in future words.

The first player to cross out all 21 consonants wins!

How to Play

1. Give each player a section of a game board and have them write their name.

2. Take turns rolling the die to select a vowel: 1 = A, 2 = E, 3 = I, 4 = O, 5 = U, and 6 = any vowel.

3. Create a real word containing the selected vowel, using only consonants that have not been crossed out.

4. Cross out each consonant used in the word. Those consonants cannot be used in later words.

5. If you cannot create a word, miss your turn and pass the die to the next player.

6. The first player to cross out all 21 consonants wins!

Vowels can be reused, words may contain additional vowels, and Y counts as a consonant for this game. Proper names and abbreviations are not allowed.

Print on A4 paper or select Fit to Page for US Letter paper. Each game board accommodates two players, so print as many copies as needed for your group.

Laminate the boards and use dry-erase markers for repeated play. Assemble the included die or use a standard six-sided die.
