? Meet Freddie the Frog!

Freddie loves hopping from lily pad to lily pad!

Now he's ready to help children discover how addition works.

Each number on Freddie's pond number line has its own lily pad, beginning at 0 and ending at 10.

Children place Freddie on the starting number and help him hop forward the number of spaces shown by the second number in the equation.

For example:

2 + 3 = 5

  1. Find number 2 on the number line.

  2. Place Freddie on the number 2.

  3. Hop forward 3 spaces.

  4. Count each hop: 3, 4, 5.

  5. Freddie lands on 5!

2 + 3 = 5

By physically moving Freddie or tracing the hops with a finger, children can see how addition moves numbers forward.

? What Is a Number Line?

A number line is a line with numbers arranged in order, from smallest to largest.

In this activity, children use a number line from 0 to 10.

Each number has its own place, and moving forward means the number becomes larger.

Number lines help children:

  • Recognize numbers in the correct order

  • Understand that numbers increase as they move forward

  • Count forward one number at a time

  • Connect addition equations with visual movement

  • Develop number sense and mathematical reasoning

  • Solve addition problems more independently

Freddie's colorful pond turns this important mathematical tool into an exciting learning adventure!

? How to Play – Hop and Add!

Step 1 – Prepare Freddie and the Number Line

Print the number line and carefully cut out Freddie the Frog from the worksheet.

For longer-lasting use, laminate the number line and Freddie.

Step 2 – Read the Addition Problem

Choose an addition problem from the worksheet.

For example:

3 + 2 = ?

Step 3 – Find the Starting Number

Place Freddie on the first number in the equation.

In this example, Freddie starts on 3.

Step 4 – Hop Forward!

Look at the second number in the equation.

Freddie needs to hop forward 2 spaces.

Count aloud as he hops:

4... 5!

Step 5 – Write the Answer

Freddie lands on number 5!

Write the answer in the box.

3 + 2 = 5

Continue practicing with the remaining addition problems.

✏️ Guided and Independent Addition Practice

? Let's Practice Together!

The guided practice page introduces four addition problems with colorful visual examples.

Children follow Freddie's hops and see exactly how he reaches the answer.

Examples include:

3 + 2 = 5

5 + 3 = 8

1 + 4 = 5

4 + 0 = 4

The final example also introduces an important concept:

Adding zero means the number stays the same!

Freddie doesn't need to hop when adding zero.

? You Can Do It!

Once children understand the process, they can move on to the independent practice worksheets.

Each problem includes:

  • A short sentence identifying Freddie's starting number

  • Instructions explaining how many spaces to hop

  • A written addition equation

  • A blank answer box

For example:

"I start on 6 and jump 2 spaces. I landed on ___!"

6 + 2 = ___

Children use the number line to find the answer, then complete the equation.

The activities encourage children to gradually move from guided practice toward independent problem-solving.

Freddie's Number Hunt – Call out a number and ask children to place Freddie on the matching lily pad.

Hop and Count – Move Freddie along the number line while counting forward from 0 to 10.

Addition Challenge – Say an addition equation aloud and ask children to find the answer using Freddie.

What's Missing? – Give children an equation with a missing number and challenge them to discover the answer.

Make Your Own Equation – Let children choose a starting number and decide how many spaces Freddie should hop.

Partner Practice – One child creates an addition problem while another uses the number line to solve it.

Finger Hops – Instead of moving Freddie, children can use their finger to hop along the number line.

Body Movement Addition – Create a large number line on the floor and let children physically jump forward to solve addition problems.

Teacher Tip: Begin with small addition problems within 5 before introducing addition within 10.

Encourage children to point to each number as Freddie hops and count each movement aloud.
