Description

A no-prep polar science escape room for grades 6-8, in digital and print versions. Student teams open five science locks and a final vault on a research ship by reading short field-notes cards. Every answer is on the card in front of them, so it works before, during or after a unit. It runs in any web browser with no student logins and no Google account, and it works offline.

WHAT IS INCLUDED

  • The escape room: one self-contained HTML file. Students type a code; a wrong code stays locked, a right one opens the next lock
  • 6 locks with 5 different puzzle types: a sort, a calculation, a match with decoys, an evidence hunt, and an ice maze, then a vault lock built from the codes
  • Two optional hints per lock; the final screen shows team name, time, hints used and wrong codes
  • A teacher guide with setup, sharing steps for Chromebooks and a learning management system, and a full answer key with the reasoning for every code
  • A print version of every lock, a team recording sheet with roles, and a printable certificate
  • 3 wrap-up questions with model answers

WHAT STUDENTS WORK THROUGH

  • Lock 1: Arctic or Antarctica? An ocean surrounded by land vs. land surrounded by an ocean
  • Lock 2: Albedo and the ice-albedo feedback, with a short calculation
  • Lock 3: Cold-climate adaptations of five polar animals
  • Lock 4: Earth's tilt, six months of daylight, and why the poles are cold, proved with evidence from the text
  • Lock 5: A maze across land ice and sea ice: which melting raises sea level
  • Lock 6: The vault

WHY THIS ROOM

  • The codes cannot be skipped: each lock's content opens only with the right code, and the answers are not in the page source
  • Guessing is slow: three wrong codes in a row freeze the lock for 30 seconds
  • It aims straight at common misconceptions: polar bears and penguins at the same pole, poles cold because they are far from the Sun, and melting sea ice raising sea level

WHO IT IS FOR

  • Grades 6-8 earth science, life science and geography
  • The week before winter break, a sub day, or a unit review

FORMAT

  • Delivered as a ZIP: the HTML escape room plus a PDF teacher guide and print version
  • About 30-45 minutes for a team of 2-4
