Description

This is a set of 24 scientist biography worksheets that students can use while researching important African, Black, and African American scientists. Each worksheet includes photos or drawings of the scientist when possible. Teacher notes give information about the area of research for each individual, date of birth, ethnicity, if they have won a Nobel Prize, or if they are a person with a disability.

Information about these individuals can be found in the various books listed in the bibliography. I own these books as part of my classroom library so my students can use them as part of their research for this project. so I know that my students can find the required information about each individual I’ve included. However, the amount of biographical information available for each scientist online varies and that can add to the challenge of this research project. In general I have found that Nobel Prize winners are among the easier ones to research. To also help you determine which scientists will be easier for your students to research I have indicated if they have entries in Encyclopedia Britannica (our school has a subscription but many entries are free), in Biography.com , in the book: Women in science: 50 fearless pioneers who changed the world. By Ignotofsky, or in African and African American women of science. By Bernstein, Winkler, & Zierdt-Warshaw.

I limit the number of students who can pick each scientist to encourage diversity in the final presentation and classroom display.

This could be used as part of a “Scientist of the Week” bulletin board with individual students being assigned to research a scientist for the board each week on a rotating basis.

This also would work well for Black History Month lessons in science.

I have students brainstorm how many scientists they can name.

We then talk about having a “growth mindset” in science (page 11) and that by researching the lives of scientists we can find examples of how they used a growth mindset to overcome obstacles and become successful scientists.

I then have students pick scientists to research, I use the background information help match up students to scientists based on interests.

I use the Rubric to help assess the completed posters.
