Description

Students will get an overview of the Spanish Civil War with this 28 slide powerpoint (also provided as a PDF so you can print it and use it as a gallery walk) and 32 question note guide. The note guide includes matching, identifications, short answer, fill in the blanks, and a creative task. Students will then read a one page primary source excerpt on the Bombing of Guernica and answer 14 questions. The answers are included where appropriate and the text analysis would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Using context clues, what does abdicate mean?
--Explain the importance of education opportunities in this sort of context.
--What role did Manuel Azana have in Spanish politics?
--Which of the following were characteristics/stances of the Nationalists and who were its supporters?
--How did the International Brigade differ from the support in #15/16?
--Explain why the total casualty number for the war is debated among historians.
--What do Picasso, Orwell, and Hemingway and their works have in common?
--Looking beyond the information here, what is another way this could be considered a practice run for WW2?
--Explain the difference between what made Monk’s heart shoot into his chest and the effect of then seeing the Heinkels.
--Inferring from the text, what does, “being strafed” mean?
--Why do you think Monks went to Guernica right after the government official’s statement?
--Why didn’t the Condor Legion suffer retaliation by those in Guernica?
