The main objective of this lesson is to have students describe various achievements made by the Sumerians and assess the impacts they had on Sumerian society, as well as our lives today.

For the activity students will receive the reading: The Many Achievements of Ancient Sumer (980 Words). This reading covers 6 topics in total: Metalwork, The Wheel, The Plow, Sailboats, Medicine, and Mathematics. Students are asked to select 3 of these topics for the activity, however the instructor may change this to suit the class’s needs.

2 different organizers are provided for students to complete based off the reading. One has 3 boxes and the other has 6 boxes. In this box chart students are asked to answer the following 3 questions

• 1) Describe your invention and how they were made:
• 2) How did this invention help to improve Sumerian Society?
• 3) Think about technology we have today that is similar to this Sumerian invention. How does this technology help us in our world today?

A key is provided to go over the material with the class when they have finished.
