Description

Students will read an overview of the Underground Railroad and analyze 11 primary sources excerpts (some touch on the Fugitive Slave Act and 3 are images) from people who were part of it. They will then answer 25 questions and complete 5 extension tasks.

The answers and a teacher information page are included so this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--How did the Fugitive Slave Act challenge the Underground Railroad?
--What type of role can you infer that Levi Coffin had in the Underground Railroad?
--Were Burns and his abolitionist allies successful, why or why not?
--Explain how Loguen’s excerpt connects to slavery and the efforts and challenges of the Underground Railroad.
--Why would Harriet Tubman’s whereabouts have been such a concern to Garrett?
--Give two examples from the historical record that would support why there was more risk on the road now (1860) compared to Garrett’s 1857 excerpt.
