Description

This PowerPoint presentation is wonderful for introducing students to the theories of WHY government is necessary and HOW government should work.

After explaining the two extremes of government power (absolute versus mob rule), the presentation guides students through the different theories of Niccolò Machiavelli, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Charles de Montesquieu, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. I have included brief sections of The Prince and Leviathan for students to consider.

The presentation is complete with slide notes, highlighted titles, vocabulary words, and important ideas, and includes custom animation. The presentation is saved using a 97-2003 format.

Finally, the file also includes a graphic organizer in which students will identify the main points associated with each philosophe and answer questions based on the discussion.

You might also consider a bundled unit I have uploaded on Theories of Government. The unit includes this PowerPoint and graphic organizer, biographies on each of the philosophers discussed (with the exception of Jean-Jacques Rousseau), and two types of assessments.
