Description

One of the greatest challenges in teaching biology is helping students understand non-tangible cellular processes like energy utilization. The good news is ATP is the primary energy molecule for all life forms, which reinforces the importance of this molecule for cells to function and maintain homeostasis. Despite universal dependence on ATP among organisms on Earth, there still seems to be a lack of quality activities available to help students master the comprehension of how the ATP-ADP cycle works.

My masters professor once said that educational studies show that it takes the average student something to the effect of twenty-six exposures, be it in the form of lecture to hands-on experiences, before true understanding of a new concept occurs. As practitioners, we don't have the luxury of time or even available resources to offer that many exposures in the course of our limited time with students. Every available resource helps, which is why I published this activity. Most high school biology textbooks do a terrible job covering energy utilization at a cellular level.

I assign this full-page activity in my high school biology class. Human anatomy and physiology teachers could also use this lesson for remedial reinforcement in their cellular processes unit.

In this activity, students have two opportunities to fill in the missing components of ATP-ADP cycle. I provided a term bank on one side in the event students need it as a modification. Students also have a chance to brainstorm the cellular processes that require ATP energy on one side. This worksheet also features a fill-in-the-blank section that summarizes the structure and function of ATP and narrates how all life forms are dependent on it. The fill-in-the-blank section also includes a word bank.
