Description

Genetics and heredity have been and will continue to be a national standard staple for biology. It is sometimes difficult to open a new unit. What is the proper scope and sequence? What is the best starting point after a pre-unit assessment? Have the students mastered the basics before we throw them into the cauldron of solving mini-story problems of probability?

This activity helps my students start their genetics unit with a firm foundation of the basics. I wish I would have had this resource in all of my previous years of teaching biology. This lesson will especially help students who are absent from the critical input days that start this unit.

This two-page introductory guide for genetics has six sections.

  • Read the Latin root word, its English meaning, and then underline the root word within the compound vocabulary terms listed in the right column
  • Fill-in-the-blank section where the student writes the missing word to complete the English meaning of the Latin root
  • Genes, alleles, and chromosomes paragraph reading for compare and contrast
  • Genes, alleles, and chromosomes fill-in-the-blank and short answer review from the front side reading
  • Genetics versus heredity section that allows students to match the term with the correct definition and then to differentiate the two terms in their own words
  • Gregor Mendel mini-biography reading section

This PDF file will become editable upon conversion to Microsoft Word using an Adobe Acrobat Reader program.

I included a two-page key with the answers in red font.
