Description

I use this Declaration of Independence Star Puzzle as a way to review the social contract theory that is covered in the Declaration of Independence.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."

This file comes with two puzzles. One is modified to help students who may have a harder time with it. I have added arrows that let the students know the directions of the puzzle pieces.

I print out the puzzle, then laminate it (so they last longer), and cut it out. I put each of the pieces in their own little bag. Then I pass out each bag to the students. I will use this puzzle periodically throughout my unit over the Declaration of Independence. The first time I will give the students 5-10 minutes to see how much they can do. Then I'll shorten the time as we learn more about it. By the end of my unit I have puzzle races and time the students. I record their times and push them to try and beat them.

It is a fun way for them to review and try and piece the document together and it is great for your tactile learners as well.
