Description

Students will read excerpts from Chief Justice Warren's unanimous opinion on Hernandez v. Texas regarding the 14th Amendment and Mexican-American civil rights in 1954. They will then answer 16 questions of varying degrees of difficulty. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--On what grounds did Hernandez argue that his constitutional rights had been violated?
--What did the state of Texas assert and did the justices concur, why or why not?
--Explain the role of community norms in this case.
--Identify a key legal responsibility of Hernandez in having this case go in his favor.
--Explain the role this case had in the wider context of the Civil Rights Movement.
