Description
All these resources go with and extend this History For Humans' video on the McCarthy Era and the Red Scare.
Engage students with the power of story as they learn the amazing and troubling story of McCarthy's rise and fall during the Red Scare and the impacts McCarthyism had on the country. This is the second episode of the Cold War series that has students understand the causes of the Red Scare and how a fraud and demagogue used fear and wild accusations to rise to power. Students learn about HUAC, House of UnAmerican Activities Committee, the Holywood Ten, Julius and Ethal Rosenberg, Truman's Loyalty Program to explain McCarthy's rise to power and his swift downfall after the McCarthy-Army Hearings.
Students complete an interactive notesheet that goes with the video that has them make predictions, record vocabulary, reflect on big ideas, complete a cause and effect chart, and answer the driving question at the end to sum up the lesson. Then there is a quick quiz to check for understanding, and an extension lesson analyzing political cartoons and then Truman speech. After answering scaffolded questions they match ideas from the speech to cartoons that represent those ideas.
Students will be left considering the legacy of McCarthyism and how to recognize the rise of fearmongering demagogues.
There are answer keys for everything and links to google drive folder with everything and updates! :)
