Description

Students will read and analyze two points of view on Reconstruction (whether it should be harsh or lenient) by answering 39 questions and completing a creative task. They will also analyze 3 images according to provided prompts. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Give two examples of the “fearful responsibilities” accompanying the trial ahead.
--In your own words, why is the change radical?
--Re-write the 4th paragraph in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
--Citing evidence from the text, are there restrictions in how Reconstruction should be carried out?
--Explain the meaning of the Jefferson Davis reference.
--Write a contextually appropriate synonym, or definition, for “redolent.”
--Does Melville seem to idealize the situation facing America(ns), why or why not?
--In what way(s) does Melville urge legislative caution?
--Which excerpt would most likely support the establishment of military districts in the south and why?
--Which of Grosvenor’s points does Melville least effectively counter and why?
