The Boston Massacre Primary Source Point of View and Image Analysis Activity

Students will read and analyze a background on the Boston Massacre, 5 different accounts of it, and a reflection from John Adams 3 years later by answering 45 questions and comparing and contrasting the accounts. They will also analyze 4 images according to 9 questions/prompts.

The answers and a teacher information page with 5 ideas for implementation are included so this would be great for a sub!  

***UPDATED to include an additional compare and contrast extension task (with examples!).***

Sample questions include:
--How did Preston act in a favorable way towards the colonists?
--Identify the main point of the first paragraph.
--How does this account attempt to persuade the reader of the soldiers’ guilt?
--In what way(s) could this account have been different had it been published on March 6? What if it had been published on March 19? 
--How authoritative of a source does Hall seem to be and why?
--Identify what at the start of the account is similar to what people have to do today when reading the news.
--Explain the point being made about the judges and why it matters.
--Write a contextually appropriate meaning for, “express to desire” and “espouse.” 
--Re-write Adam’s third paragraph in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
--How could the British have used this event as propaganda and how/for what purpose?
