The Monroe Doctrine Point of View Primary Source and Image Analysis Activity

Students will read and analyze 5 primary source excerpts about the Monroe Doctrine by answering 30 questions. They will also analyze 8 political cartoons according to provided questions and prompts. The excerpts are from Thomas Jefferson (2), John Quincy Adams, an American newspaper, and Austria's Prince Metternich. 

***UPDATED to include a creative task to compare and contrast the different points of view (examples included).***

The answers are included where appropriate so this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Why wasn’t Jefferson worried about such conflicts/threats in America’s hemisphere.
--Does Jefferson believe America needs to make a move on Cuba, why or why not?
--Citing evidence from the text, does Adams support Jefferson’s proposal?
--Would George Washington have agreed more with Thomas Jefferson or John Quincy Adams and why?
--Why was the European reaction expected to be, “revolting astonishment?”
--Explain an effect of the Monroe Doctrine Metternich foresees in the first half of his second paragraph. Was the fear of that foreseen effect warranted, why or why not?
