Description

Narrated by David McCulloch -- and featuring the voices of Sam Waterston, Morgan Freeman, Julie Harris, Laurence Fishburne, and George Plimpton -- Ken Burns' documentary on the Civil War is the definitive guide to this pivotal time in American history.

Episode 4 of this nine-part series opens with the Union's devastating losses at both Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. But while Lee's army appears nearly invincible, his military success is tempered with the death of Stonewall Jackson. Meanwhile, President Lincoln must face a North unhappy with the Emancipation Proclamation and political opposition determined to achieve an immediate end to the war. As the episode concludes, Grant settles in for a siege outside of Vicksburg while Lee once again prepares to invade the Union.

The video guide consists of 22 questions designed to maintain student engagement help make connections with material presented in class.

An answer key is included.

Although the episode is approximately 61 minutes long, this resource focuses on those sections instrumental to understanding events at the Civil War entered its third year: the Introduction, Northern Lights, Oh! Be Joyful, Under the Shade of the Trees, and Dust-covered Man.

I use this resource in my own class room and know that my students have a deeper understanding of the Civil War and surrounding events because of it. I am sure this video guide will be a valuable addition to your curriculum.
