Description

Narrated by David McCulloch -- and featuring the voices of Sam Waterston, Morgan Freeman, Julie Harris, Laurence Fishburne, and George Plimpton -- Ken Burns' documentary on the Civil War is the definitive guide to this pivotal time in American history.

Episode 8 of this nine-part series begins with William Tecumseh Sherman's determination to bring the war to the heart of the Confederacy and his subsequent "March to the Sea." The episode then addresses the desperate measures enacted by the South towards the end of the war -- including the offer of emancipation to slaves who agreed to fight for the Confederacy. In March 1865, during his Second Inaugural Address, Lincoln encourages Americans to avoid placing blame for the conflict, and to focus instead on rebuilding the nation. While Lee's Army of Northern Virginia surrenders in April, John Wilkes Booth sits alone in his Washington DC room and dreams of vengeance for the South.

The video guide consists of 20 questions designed to maintain student engagement help make connections with material presented in class.

An answer key is included.

Although the episode is approximately 68 minutes long, this resource focuses on those sections instrumental to understanding events as the Civil War drew to a close in early 1865: the Introduction, Sherman's March, Died of a Theory, Washington, March 4, 1865, and Appomattox.

I use this resource in my own class room and know that my students have a deeper understanding of the Civil War and surrounding events because of it. I am sure this video guide will be a valuable addition to your curriculum.
