Description

Narrated by David McCulloch -- and featuring the voices of Sam Waterston, Morgan Freeman, Julie Harris, Laurence Fishburne, and George Plimpton -- Ken Burns' documentary on the Civil War is the definitive guide to this pivotal time in American history.

Episode 5 of this nine-part series opens with the Battle of Gettysburg, a battle initially fought over a supply of shoes that ultimately served as both the largest campaign ever fought in North America and the turning point of the Civil War. The episode then chronicles the fall of Vicksburg, the New York City draft riots, and the first use of African American troops. The episode closes with the dedication of a new Union cemetery at Gettysburg, where Abraham Lincoln put into words the lasting implications of the war.

The video guide consists of 32 questions designed to maintain student engagement help make connections with material presented in class.

An answer key is included.

Although the episode is approximately 95 minutes long, this resource focuses on those sections instrumental to understanding events during the early months of 1863: the Introduction, Gettysburg: The First Day, Gettysburg: The Second Day, Gettysburg: The Third Day, Vicksburg, Bottom Rail on Top, and A New Birth of Freedom.

I use this resource in my own class room and know that my students have a deeper understanding of the Civil War and surrounding events because of it. I am sure this video guide will be a valuable addition to your curriculum.
