Description

We developed this resource for our classrooms as a result of needing a step by step plan to support our children learn about the perimeter of quadrilaterals and triangles.

We then extended this activity to include the area of squares, rectangles and right angled triangles.

The children loved the activity, and with being a PowerPoint, we could use the template of the slides every day, simply changing the measures to create a whole new slide - it took minutes each day to do, and would provide the children with at least 20 minutes of reinforcement/embedding key skills.

As the children became more confident, we enhanced the learning of area to include compound shapes, including shapes which mixed both triangles and squares/rectangles. These slides also required some problem solving skills as we deliberately left some measures off to ensure the children could work out lengths based on what information they were given.

Following on from perimeter and area, the children were then introduced to volume of cubes, cuboids and triangular prisms. They were able to quickly see how their learning could be extended and support them in their developing knowledge of volume.

As a further activity, we also provided our children with some problem solving questions - giving them the area and the perimeter of various shapes and asking them to find all the possible measurements which could create that shape.

For example, the area of a rectangle is 40cm squared, how many different ways can this rectangle be drawn:

  • 40cm x 1cm
  • 20cm x 2cm
  • 8cm x 5cm
  • 4cm x 10cm

The slides also contain handy hints to remind the children of that they need to do. These are slowly reduced to provide independent thinking skills in the children.

Our children love this PowerPoint and we hope that yours enjoy it too!

Key skills covered:

  • Perimeter of squares, rectangles, triangles and compound shapes
  • Area of squares and rectangles
  • Area of right angled triangles
  • Area of other triangles which can be split into right angled triangles
  • Area of compound shapes including both squares and rectangles, with triangles too
  • Volume of cubes and cuboids
  • Volume of triangular prisms

This resource can also be printed off in a workbook of slides for the children to practice at a workstation independently, or for homework.
