Description

For any class on United States history, this mini-unit is an excellent means of discussing life in the North during the mid-1800s and early 1900s.

The resource includes the following:

● A PowerPoint that addresses pay and working conditions in early factories, the prevalence of child labor, and the growth of labor unions. The presentation includes a section on the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in March 1911.

● Two political cartoons, Welcome to All and Uncle Sam's Lodging House. These cartoons, focusing on immigrants to the United States during the late 1800s, include context paragraph, graphic organizers, and questions based on each cartoon.

● Guidelines for a culminating assessment in which students, using information discussed in class, create a brochure that highlights life in the North during the early and mid-1800s. The brochure is best created on a piece of heavy paper (12" x 18") folded in half.

● A video guide for Part 2 of the History Channel's three-part video Ellis Island, narrated by Mandy Patinkin. The episode focuses on immigrants' arrival at Ellis Island and how they negotiated their way through a complicated maze of health screenings and personal questions. The video guide consists of 17 questions designed to maintain student engagement.

This has been a very successful portion of my own US History curriculum for years and I have attached samples of completed brochures to the guidelines.
