Description

This zip file contains different activities (24 pages of student handouts and a PowerPoint 30 slides) which can be used to compose a unit for AP Biology or advanced Biology students involving the topics of the Cell Cycle and Mitosis. Topics in this unit include stages of the cell cycle and mitosis, differences in mitosis between plants and animals, regulation of the cell cycle, checkpoints and how errors in cell cycle and regulation checkpoints may lead to cancer. More specifics concerning the topics addressed in this package of activities appear in the objectives at the end of this description.

While these lessons were originally designed for my AP Biology curriculum, they can be adapted to any advanced level Biology program.

This lesson packet contains a listing of the learning goals, common core learning standards, NGSS learning standards and the AP Biology performance indicators addressed in these materials. These are included in the packet and at the end of the description of this lesson.

The components of this lesson package can easily be displayed to students using and LCD projector and may be readily modified into formats facilitating smartboard technology. Most documents are included in both word doc or docx as well as pdf format to allow editing for specific teacher needs. The learning guides/assignments contain links to online resources to support student learning.

Suggested answer keys are included for all items.

The specific contents of the learning package includes the following items (the page count for these items are actual student handouts as answer key page counts are not included):

-- Cell Cycle and Mitosis Objectives and NGSS, ETS and Common Core Standards in word and pdf format (4 pages)

-- Cells Cycle and Mitosis PowerPoint (30 slides)

-- Cell Completion Notes to accompany the PowerPoint (8 pages) in word and pdf format

-- Cell Cycle Worksheet with key in word and pdf (5 pages/34 questions)

-- Time for Cell Replication Lab Activity in word and pdf format with key (2 pages)

-- Cell Cycle and Mitosis Exam with key in word and pdf format (5 pages/20 multiple choice, 19 completion, 9 diagram and 1 short answer question(s)

Mitosis and Cell Cycle Objectives ETS

Enduring Understanding

IST-1 Heritable information provides for continuity of life.

Learning Objectives

IST-1.B Describe the events that occur in the cell cycle.

IST-1.C Explain how mitosis results in the transmission of chromosomes from one generation to the next.

IST-1.D Describe the role of checkpoints in regulating the cell cycle.

IST-1.E Describe the effects of disruptions to the cell cycle on the cell or organism.

Mitosis and Cell Cycle Learning Goals (local)

Upon completion of this unit the student will be able to:

1. discuss some reasons that cell size is limited
2. describe the composition of chromosomes and indicate how their structure changes during the cell cycle.
3. list the phases of the cell cycle and describe the general sequence of events that takes place in each phase
4. distinguish between interphase and mitosis
5. list the phases of mitosis and describe the events characteristic of each phase
6. recognize the phases of mitosis from diagrams or micrographs
7. calculate the relative duration of the cell cycle stages
8. list three difference in the process animal cell mitosis and plant cell mitosis
9. discuss the processes of binary fission, budding, sportulation, and vegetative propagation
10. discuss the role of external factors in the regulation of the cell cycle
11. discuss the role of checkpoints in the cell cycle
12. describe how failures in checkpoints may result in cancer
13. define the term apoptosis and explain the basic steps by which this process occurs
14. discuss the role of programmed cell death in development and differentiation and the prevention of cancer.

NGSS Standard

HS-LS1-4. Use a model to illustrate the role of cellular division (mitosis) and differentiation in producing and maintaining complex organisms.

Common Core State Standards Connections:

ELA/Literacy

SL.11-12.5 Make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphical, audio, visual, and interactive elements) in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest.

Mathematics

MP.4 Model with mathematics.
