Description

Something is troubling Harvest Hollow’s star quarterback, and your students are on the case!

Step into Harvest Hollow Sports Medicine and investigate Sawyer Crowe’s injuries as his team prepares for its biggest rivalry game. Students examine evidence, interpret diagnostic images, recommend care, and document their findings. Along the way, a missing lucky bandana adds a mystery of its own!

No prior knowledge is required. Guided questions and included resources help students work through the case. Students will need internet access to research information and support their answers.

More than a reading passage and questions, this fall football case study asks students to:

  • Color-code the rotator cuff muscles and connect them to shoulder movements.
  • Interpret examination findings and an ultrasound report.
  • Solve a riddle to identify a special shoulder test.
  • Measure a wound, calculate an irrigation volume, and select a closure method.
  • Compare simulated X-rays to identify a fracture and evidence of healing.
  • Research concussion danger signs using CDC HEADS UP resources.
  • Interpret illustrated pupil responses, concentration findings, and balance observations.
  • Organize the evidence into a SOAP note.
  • Find hidden bird-shaped letters and solve the missing-bandana mystery.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

  • Seven-page printable student packet, including a Resources Page and a separate SOAP note form (PDF)
  • Complete answer key (PDF)
  • Teacher instructions and teaching notes (PDF)
  • Sample SOAP note formatted as a presentation for optional classroom display (PowerPoint or Google Slides)
  • Links to supporting references and CDC concussion guidance

GREAT FOR SPORTS MEDICINE & HEALTH SCIENCE

Use this activity to connect anatomy, medical terminology, injury assessment, and clinical reasoning in a seasonal case study. Students can work independently or with a partner. Teacher notes include support for students who are new to SOAP notes.

PRINTING & PREPARATION

The student packet is designed for black-and-white printing. Students will need coloring supplies and internet access for research. To reduce printing, omit the separate SOAP note form and have students use blank paper. The remaining six pages can be printed double-sided on three sheets.

Bring fall and football into your classroom and challenge students to examine the evidence, explain their reasoning, and solve Sawyer’s case!
