Description

Most chemistry students have ample opportunities to write orbital diagrams and electron configurations. One way to test for mastery is to have students judge the accuracy of pictured orbital diagrams and corresponding electron configurations of unknown atoms. Students will gain that experience in this three-page activity.

The students’ tasks are as follows for each numbered problem:

  • Record the element’s name
  • Identify whether the orbital diagram is accurate or inaccurate
  • Correct the diagram if erroneous
  • Evaluate the corresponding electron configuration and confirm its accuracy by rewriting it or writing the corrected version
  • State the rule or principle violated if applicable
  • Explain how the rule or principle is in violation if suitable.

Product features:

  • A three-page lesson, excluding the title page
  • Includes a separate three-page key with the answers in bold-colored font
  • The student work pages include a built-in inset overview of the three rules
  • This resource will become editable upon conversion to Microsoft Word using an Adobe Acrobat DC Reader app.
