Description
Students will read and analyze an immigrant teenager's account of coming to America via Ellis Island by answering 14 questions. They will then read excerpts from 5 interviews from other immigrants who went through Ellis Island and answer 10 questions. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!
Sample questions include:
--In contrast, summarize what a pull factor is and give 2 examples of it.
--Explain what a “greenhorn” is.
--Identify a risk of Sadie’s job and explain the balance she has to maintain while working.
--What do you think she would consider her accomplishments to be?
--If you were moving to another country where you did not speak the language, what 3 things would you do to prepare for your permanent move? What would be the 3 biggest challenges when you got to your new country?
--How did Kalman stay connected to his heritage?
--What changed when he turned 13?
--Compare and contrast how the siblings remembered packing for their move to America.
