Delve into the Emancipation Proclamation to determine whether Lincoln helped, hurt or had little effect on slaves in the 1860’s. In this lesson, students will be learning about the Emancipation Proclamation by close reading and analyzing the document. Students will translate excerpts of the Proclamation and then answer questions pertaining to the document. The class will then analyze two primary source documents of images showing two different reactions to the Emancipation Proclamation. To end the lesson, students will write a persuasive piece on whether the Emancipation Proclamation helped, hurt or had little effect on slaves in the early 1860’s.
