Description
? Trail of Tears Walking Source Analysis Activity – Immersive & Student-Centered
Transform your Trail of Tears unit into a powerful learning experience with this immersive walking source analysis activity. Instead of passively reading a textbook, students move through a chronological gallery of dramatic historical image sources that reveal how government decisions led to forced removal, suffering, and loss for the Cherokee people.
Designed as an outdoor or indoor gallery walk, students travel in “family groups” from station to station, analyzing each source using the DIG method (Describe, Interpret, Generalize). Each station builds on the last — from the discovery of gold on Cherokee land to broken court protections, betrayal through treaties, the forced march west, and the devastating human cost.
This activity keeps students engaged, emotionally invested, and critically thinking while remaining STAAR-friendly and developmentally appropriate for middle school learners.
Students will explore key historical moments including:
• Land pressure caused by gold discovery
• The Supreme Court ruling in Worcester v. Georgia
• Government betrayal through the Treaty of New Echota
• The forced march known as the Trail of Tears
• The lasting consequences of removal
