Daily Mental Math Challenge - Four Operations, over 1000 questions, differentiated

We devised this resource to support our children develop their speed and accuracy within mental math - as well as enhance the complexity of the levels they were working at.

We provided daily questions for the children to answer in the four operations of:

• addition
• subtraction
• multiplication
• division

We saw their skills develop quite rapidly, so we limited the time the children had to complete the questions to just five minutes each day. What followed was a year long journey to perfect this resource with clearly differentiated cards in terms of skills and length of the activity.

Card 1:

• Addition and Subtraction below 20
• Multiplication and Division skills within 1, 2, 5 and 10 times tables
• Crossing the boundary of 10

Card 2:

• Addition and Subtraction below 50
• Multiplication and Division skills within 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables
• Crossing the boundary of 10's

Card 3:

• Addition and Subtraction below 100
• Multiplication and Division skills within 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10 times tables
• Crossing boundaries

Card 4:

• Addition and Subtraction below 1000
• Multiplication and Division skills within all times tables up to 12 x 12
• Crossing boundaries through tens and hundreds

Our children in 5th Grade were challenged by the fourth card as they were desperate to complete it everyday in order to beat the challenge! It really did make them think -

5 minutes is not long to complete 80 questions within the four operations - but they certainly got faster!

When you purchase and download this resource, you will receive four different math cards - each getting progressively more difficult, and each with its' own answer sheet.

The aims for the children is easy:

• Finish the questions each day
• Get each day correct with no errors
• Get all five days finished and correct and move to the next card.
