Delve into the history of Jamestown colony and the mystery of the many deaths that occurred during the “starving time.”
Students will begin the lesson with a forensic exercise. Groups will be challenged to examine evidence from an archaeological dig at Jamestown Colony.
As more evidence is revealed, students must make connections with the evidence and determine which event in American History it represents.
The class will then read about the founding and growth of the Jamestown colony. Pairs will then discover seven theories that probably contributed to the many deaths at Jamestown during the “starving time.”
The class will then rank the theories on a human spectrum, debating and discussing the credibility and likelihood of which theories caused the most deaths.
Finally, students will compose a persuasive piece to prove which theory most likely caused the most deaths.
