For this activity, students will be doing a close reading of the painting, "American Progress", by Tom Gast. This is a great introduction to Manifest Destiny and the American desire for westward expansion.
Students start by analyzing the entire picture, taking notes on what they see in the picture. Then, they focus on specific parts of the picture for their analysis. They look at different groups and predict why they are going west. Additionally, students examine the effects of Manifest Destiny on the animals and Native Americans already living there. The final activity has the students drawing another version of the picture from a Native American perspective.
Included in this product are multiple versions of the graphic organizer so the teacher may choose how to present it to the class, as well as a PowerPoint presentation that highlights the different groups in the picture.
