Description

Students will read two points of view on Westward Expansion and Manifest Destiny (John O'Sullivan and Albert Gallatin), analyze an image, and answer 18 questions (mix of academic, opinion, and creative) to demonstrate an understanding of the texts. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Why do you think a “pretext” was needed to justify Manifest Destiny?
--Compare and contrast how a Northerner and Southerner would have reacted to Gallatin’s thoughts. Which group would have been more likely to agree with him and why?
--Describe the role played by Texas in O’Sullivan’s defense of Manifest Destiny.
--How does O’Sullivan feel about the incursion of other countries into America’s ability to achieve its goals? How do you know that?
--Identify any emotions an American would have felt in the 1800s reading O’Sullivan’s words. Are they the same or different than the emotions it evokes from you reading it today? Explain your thought process.
--Why did the fulfillment of America’s Manifest Destiny occur when it did, and not a few decades before or after?
