Description

Students will read and analyze 2 points of view on whether or not America should hold the Philippines as a territory by answering 41 questions and completing an extension task. They will then analyze 7 political cartoons according to 2 questions and 2 prompts. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
—Citing evidence from the text, which imperialism motives are addressed in the second paragraph?
—Rewrite the 4th paragraph in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
—Explain the meaning of the phrase, “incurably indolent.”
—In what way(s) does Crooker see America’s course at having veered from the precedents set?
—Under what circumstances would the flag lose its glory? What impact would that potentially have domestically and internationally?
—Explain the danger in having “blind faith” in one’s government.
—Why does Crooker think the economic argument for keeping the Philippines isn’t sound?
—What is Crooker’s weakest argument for America releasing the Philippines and why? What, if anything, could have been added to bolster it?
—Which of Beveridge’s points does Crooker most effectively counter and why?
