Description

Students will read and analyze 2 points of view on what should be the goal of the Civil War by answering 35 questions--some are compare/contrast and overarching questions. They will also analyze 4 political cartoons according to 8 questions/prompts. The text excerpts are from Horace Greeley and President Lincoln in 1862. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--In your own words, what is Greeley disappointed in?
--Explain what Greeley meant by, “fossil politicians.”
--In what way(s) does Greeley see Lincoln as possibly strengthening the Confederate cause?
--Why do the two types of Southern voters matter to the contents of the letter?
--How could the “Union as it was” be interpreted in different ways? How could it be determined which way the Union was would be the way to strive for?
--Write a contextually appropriate synonym, or definition, for “forbear.”
--What is Greeley’s strongest argument for abolition as the premier war aim and why?
--Which of Greeley’s points does Lincoln most effectively counter and why?
--Does this political cartoon support or oppose the sentiments of the either text excerpt, why or why not?
--Would this cartoon have been published before or after the texts above and how do you know?
