Description
Students will read 10 quotes about slavery, the possibility of secession, and the impending Civil War, as well as an excerpt from the inauguration speeches of Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis. They will answer 19 questions about the text sources and analyze 11 images according to 5 prompts. The answers are included and this would be great for a sub!
Sample questions include:
--What emotions, or convictions, does Lundy's statement get across and how?
--What type of person could Garrison be categorized as based on his quote? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.
--Re-write the 3rd quote in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
--How might the Seneca Falls Delegate feel about slavery and the possibility of secession, and what in the quote gives you that impression?
--What does, "forfeit my life," mean in this context? Why is John Brown in a position where that could be his fate?
--According to Lincoln in 1861, under what circumstances will there be conflict?
--Why does Davis make a point of referencing the Declaration of Independence?
--Identify the two most persuasive parts of Lincoln's excerpt.
