Description

Texas History students will read and analyze 9 quotes regarding Texas secession prior to the Civil War by summarizing them, determining if the quote is for or against secession, and answering 14 questions. The quotes and points of view come from 3 different years and 6 different people (Sam Houston is included 3 times in various contexts). The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--How does Houston balance his belief in states' rights with avoiding secession?
--Why might some Texan Confederates have not believed that bloodshed would result from secession?
--Explain the significance of the second quote using the phrase "undeniable truths."
--Which of Houston's explanations, or points, for refusing to take the oath carries the most weight, and why?
--Inferring from prior knowledge, why does Cutwell think a South without slavery is worthless?
--Do you think the fact that Graber was an immigrant had an impact on his being a staunch Confederate, or at least a Texan loyal to the cause of the majority? Why or why not?
--Write 3 rebuttals Reagan could have delivered to Houston and 3 rebuttals Houston could have delivered to Reagan. Balance creativity with historical plausibility.
