Description

Students will read and analyze two points of view on the League of Nations (one for America joining by James Phelan and one against America joining by Lawrence Sherman) by answering 36 questions, completing a creative task, and analyzing 7 images according to provided prompts. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Which image most aligns with Sherman’s excerpt and why?
--Explain the significance of Taft’s quote.
--Why does Phelan caution against “serenely regarding” Europe?
--Why might Phelan have included the point about the relevance of democracy to workers?
--Write a contextually appropriate synonym, or definition, for “benighted.”
--In what way(s) would America be a hypocrite if it did not join the League?
--How does Sherman imply that America might not be a good fit for the League of Nations?
--Rewrite the third paragraph in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
--What end is being sought, and do you think Sherman is convinced it’s possible, why or why not?
--Which of Phelan’s points does Sherman most effectively counter and why?
--If you could re-title each of these speeches what would you choose and why?
