Description

Hear ye! Hear ye! Read all about it!

This resource is an excellent means of assessing students' understanding of events leading up to the American Revolution.

As part of this project, students will work in groups to create their own newspaper based on events leading up to or otherwise involving the American Revolution. Each member of the group should be responsible for a specific "article" of the newspaper: factual, biography, editorial, or political cartoon.

Explaining the project, answering student questions, and allowing them to organize into groups generally requires one class period. Beyond that, the length of the project can vary.  In addition to the guidelines, the resource includes a rubric that can serve as a checklist for students and a means of assessing completed posters.  Both the guidelines and rubric have been uploaded in pdf format, with space for adjustments in due date and points available.

The resource also includes both an organizer that assists students in citing using proper MLA format and a PowerPoint containing samples of completed projects.

Finally, as it is an important step in any project, the resource includes a critique sheet that encourages students to assess their own performance as well of those of their group members.

To help prepare students for this project, I have uploaded The Road to American Independence. This single resource includes a PowerPoint that describes events leading to the American Revolution, a graphic organizer of the Acts of Parliament, two political cartoons, Join, or Die and The Repeal, or the Funeral of Miss Ame-Stamp, and a biography on Benjamin Franklin.  Check it out!
